What is CowBoom doing next?

CowBoom is all about continual improvements. That means we’re taking your direct feedback in order to constantly enhance the shopping experience. Some recent improvements that we’ve made include free shipping offers, customer ratings and reviews and a new checkout process for a smooth and seamless transaction. We’re working on some other things right now – like warranties, a mobile site and some other secrets in the sauce. We can’t tell you everything!

Why is CowBoom?

Someone’s gotta serve up those daily deals at crazy low prices! Best Buy’s inventory doesn’t always sell out completely, and when that happens, it’s sent to us. We can afford to offer it at a lower price as this isn’t its first time at the rodeo. If you’re looking for an easy way to go “green”, CowBoom’s got you covered. We sell several pre-owned or gently used electronics. Why contribute to unnecessary waste when you can get practically the same thing for a fraction of the cost? If you’re still wary about buying used, keep in mind that all CowBoom products are fully backed by our 30 day guaranteed return policy! Great deals, no bull! That’s why it’s CowBoom!

Electric Cars: The New Green Machine

Did you know that every time you start your car it takes approximately 5 minutes to heat up? This is important because gasoline engines are dirtiest when they’re first started and that dirt is flowing freely from your exhaust pipe directly into our atmosphere. Approximately 63% of car trips travel 6 miles or less according to a recent study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads. Every time we take our cars out for a coffee break or a quick errand we are clogging our environment with unnecessary pollution. So what’s the solution? Well there’s a few. We can choose to walk when we can, cycle when possible and most importantly, consider electric vehicles  a serious part of our future. Best Buy is taking great strides to make electric vehicles available to the public and has recently started carrying electric bikes and scooters in select U.S. stores as well as online. While still in their infancy, electric vehicles have come a long way since they were first introduced many years ago. These vehicles can be charged using the standard 110 volt outlet, (the same outlet you plug your coffee maker in) and can travel up to 15 to 20 mph and range between 10 to 20 miles on a single charge. This is a perfect solution for errand goers and daily urban life. It may seem a bit “out there” now, but in order to preserve our environment, an open mind is necessary and this is definitely a direction we need to drive in! Now, it’s your turn!

We want to know:

Would you use an electric vehicle for your short trips?

Making the World a Better Place, One Geek at a Time!

It’s easy to get caught up in the mindset that we don’t have enough time to contribute the way we would if our schedules were more open. It’s time to remind ourselves that small actions ultimately create big movements.  We can all lend a helping hand which can amount to a generous outreach in the long run. Take a cue from Best Buy who recently hosted a Wii Tournament to raise money for child abuse in Rhode Island. The best way to help others is to share your passion with them. If you are hands on and enjoy building things, then an organization such as Habitat for Humanity would be a good cause to devote your time. If you’re a gadget lover, getting involved with an organization focused on technology and electronics would naturally be a good fit. It doesn’t take much if we all contribute! Check out these technology focused volunteer organizations to lend a helping hand.

  1. Geek Corps – Promoting stability and prosperity in the developing world through information and communications technology.
  2. SuperGeek – Serve people with disabilities by helping provide them with free and low cost technical services.
  3. Volunteer Abroad – See the world in a new way while contributing your passion and skills to a new culture and country.
  4. Crisis Commons – Created to unite communities seeking common ground and cultivate innovation in the use of technology for mobility and efficiency during crisis.
  5. Universal Giving – Helps people give and volunteer with top-performing, vetted projects all over the world.

Have you volunteered lately? What organization have you worked with in the past or currently?

Do What You Love

For many, life is filled with uncertainty, and recently the recession has certainly taken its toll on a number of people . But even in the toughest circumstances, the right perspective can help you find the silver lining and hopefully prepare you for bigger and better endeavors.

As the saying goes, “what goes up must come down” – but the opposite is also true. For instance, we can take a queue from a life changing event that happened after the dot com bubble burst back in 2001. Several internet companies closed their doors, and the ones that survived had to severely cut down their work force. Two of the many newly laid off employees at that time were Garry Heath and Paul Fletcher, who worked in two completely different departments at Buy.com. Their only connection at the time (besides their former employer) was that they were both Canadians. (This is an important bond, eh!).

Paul and Garry decided to join forces as their greatest strengths complimented each other nicely. Garry, an IT guru, was working on developing a technology that specialized in returned inventory management and Paul, a gifted businessman was a perfect salesman for the venture.  After literally setting up shop in Paul’s garage and working around the clock, they managed to sign up their former employer, Buy.com, as their first client! The new company flourished and they continued to sign more clients and hire more staff to support the growing demand for their services. In December 2008, Best Buy acquired the company.

This is the story of Dealtree, CowBoom’s parent company. This is definitely a situation where lemons were turned into lemonade! It’s not easy to start anything new, and it took Paul and Garry several years to build their business into what it is today (over 350 employees). The lesson all of us at CowBoom take with us, is that the sooner you can learn from challenge the sooner you can change your circumstances for the better. It may sound cliché, but if the only thing you can count on is change, then perhaps embracing the change as a time to reflect on what you could do differently may be a silver lining amongst an otherwise dark cloud.   Paul and Garry certainly think so!

Do you think this is easier said than done, or have you also experienced a life-changing event that propelled you in ways you previously hadn’t thought possible?
